Indian shares scaled fresh record highs on Tuesday before ending off their day’s highs.

The benchmark 30-share BSE Sensex ended the session up 151.81 points, or 0.28 percent, at 54,554.66, with buying interest seen in banks, financials and IT stocks.

The Sensex scaled a record high of 54,779.66 earlier in the day before giving up most of the gains.

The broader NSE Nifty hit as high as 16,359.25 before finishing up 21.85 points, or 0.13 percent, at 16,280.10.

Bharti Airtel shares jumped 3.8 percent amid expectations that the telecom major will benefit from Vodafone Idea’s weak financial position.

Tech Mahindra rallied 2.8 percent to extend gains for the fourth straight session while Mahindra & Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC rose 1-2 percent.

Shree Cement slumped 4 percent after unveiling its first-quarter earnings results.

Metal stocks such as Hindalco, Tata Steel and JSW Steel fell 2-4 percent on concerns about Chinese demand.

Zomato plunged 4.3 percent ahead of its quarterly earnings release.

State-owned Coal India shed 0.7 percent after its Q1 results missed Street estimates.
